1. Rubber Gaskets
The natural rubber is applied to water, sea water, air, inert gas and aqueous solutions of alkali or salt, but it is not suitable for mineral oil and non-polar solvent; long-term operating temperatures of natural rubbers should not exceed 90℃;natural rubbers can be used above -60℃ and they have good cryogenic properties.

Nitrile rubbers are suitable for petroleum products such as oil, lubricants, fuel oil and the long-term operating temperature of nitrile rubbers is 120℃; nitrile rubbers can stand temperatures of 150 ℃ in hot oil and can be used at low temperatures from -20 ℃ to -10 ℃.

Chloroprene rubbers are applied to seawater, weak acid, weak bases and salt solutions and have good oxygen and ozone aging resistance; oil resistance of chloroprene rubbers is worse than nitrile rubbers' and better than other general rubbers'; long-term operating temperatures of chloroprene rubbers are below 90 ℃; the highest operating temperatures of chloroprene rubbers should not exceed 130 ℃; low temperatures of chloroprene rubbers are from -30 to 50 ℃.

Fluorine rubbers have many varieties and they have good acid, oxidation, oil resistance and solvent resistance. Fluorine rubbers can be used for almost any acid medium, some oil and solvent and their operating temperatures are below 200 ℃.

Rubber sheets which are used for flange gaskets are mainly applied to pipelines and can be used under 1.568MPa. Therefore, the rubber gasket is the softest in all kinds of gaskets, has good adhesion performance and can achieve the effect of the seal under the pretightening force. Given this factor, rubber gaskets are easy to be forced out due to their thick walls or low hardness.

When rubber sheets are used in organic solvents such as benzene, ketone and ether, solvent swelling, weight increments, softening and stickiness will happen, resulting in sealing failure. Generally, if the solvent swelling degree is over 30%, the rubber gasket can not be used.

It is more appropriate to adopt rubber gaskets under low pressure(especially under 0.6MPa) and vacuum  conditions. Rubber materials have good compactness and low air permeability. Fluorine rubber gaskets are the most suitable gaskets for vacuum containers and their highest vacuum degrees can reach 1.3×10-7Pa. Rubber gaskets need to have baking and air exhaust treatments when they are used under vacuum degrees from 10-1 to 10-7Pa.
