What Is Pipe Stub End?

A pipe stub end, also called a stub-end or lap-joint stub end, is a specific pipe fitting used in piping systems, especially in flange connections, to make it easier to connect two pipes or components with different end types or sizes. A pipe stub end is made up of a short piece of pipe with one end flaring out or having a lap joint collar, while the other end can be directly welded to a pipe or component of a different size or type. Its purpose is to make it simple to align and assemble components while enabling the quick disconnection of flanged parts like valves, pumps, or other equipment.

Common Types of Pipe Stub Ends

Long Stub End: Long stub ends are employed when you need more support, as they are longer to provide extra reinforcement for the flanged connection.
Short Stub End: Short stub ends find use in tight spaces where minimal support is adequate for the flange connection.
Butt Weld Stub End: These stub ends have a butt weld end, allowing direct welding to the pipe or component. They're widely used in situations demanding a strong, leak-resistant connection, often seen in high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
Threaded Stub End: Threaded stub ends come with threads at one end, simplifying attachment to threaded pipes or fittings. They're commonly applied in smaller diameter piping systems and for straightforward assembly and disassembly.
Socket Weld Stub End: Socket weld stub ends are designed to fit over the pipe or fitting and are subsequently welded in place. They are commonly found in smaller diameter piping systems.
Reducing Stub End: These stub ends bridge pipes or components with varying diameters. One end features a larger lap joint collar, while the other end matches the size of the smaller pipe or component.
