The Cause of the Leakage of the Tee and Its Solution

A pipeline, as an economical, effective, and environmentally friendly transportation method, is currently mostly used for the transportation of liquids and gases. However, leakages often occur in real life. The leakage of the pipeline may be caused by the selection and use of flanges or tees. Therefore, how can we prevent the tee from leaking? To prevent the leakage of the tee, we must understand the cause of the leakage of the tee. The reasons for leakages of tees are as follows:

1. The leakage of the tee caused by stress
A tee is an important structural part of the pipeline system. It has a unique structure and great difference in wall thickness at different parts. There is great structural stress for a tee. In the actual use process, the pipe is not only affected by its gravity, but also bears the tensile and compressive stresses imposed on the straight pipe due to frequent changes in the external environment temperature, as well as the bending and torsion added to the system such as the stratum creep of the pipeline passing through the area and earthquake. Therefore, the stress condition of the tee is much more complicated than that of a straight pipe. That's why we can find many superficial cracks at the bottom of many pits and pull marks on the body of the failed tee.

2. The leakage of the tee caused by the manufacturing of the tee
In the cold extrusion forming process of the tee, if there are burrs on the surface of the material in the tee's mold, or the inner wall of the mold is not lubricated well, the metal on the surface of the material will be mechanically hindered by the inner surface of the mold in the forming and flow process. Metal pull marks are formed on the surface, and pull marks of the pipe body destroy the integrity of the surface of the tee, which reduce the strength of the metal. Oxidation and decarburization will occur for the metal structure near the pull marks in the stress relief heat treatment process of the tee with pull marks in the high-temperature environment in the furnace. The metal on the surface of the pull mark is oxidized, and oxides are formed. Moreover, stress concentration will happen on the surface. It may become the source of cracks and cause the tee to crack during the hydraulic pressure of the tee.

3. The leakage of the tee caused by missed inspection of the tee before leaving the factory
We all know that magnetic particle inspection is required for tees before they leave the factory. It can detect whether there are actually invisible cracks inside the tee to prevent leakages caused by the cracks when the tee is in use. However, if the magnetic particle inspection is not conducted for the tee before leaving the factory, it will be shipped directly to the customer. If the customer doesn't test the tee before using it, it is prone to leakage.

4. According to the above reasons for the leakage of the tee, we know how to prevent the leakage of the tee, that is, improve the casting quality, and carry out the strength test strictly according to the specifications before the tee is installed; choose appropriate tees according to the medium and operating conditions; heavy objects are not allowed to be stacked on the three-way ball valve, and the three-way ball valve with large diameters should be installed with a bracket.
